Recent algorithm changes at Google have altered that strategy in a significant way. Turning your existing site into a hub site, or a hybrid hub / authority site can boost your Google ranking and you will see your site rise much higher in the search rankings than other related and similarly themed sites.

When most people think about linking, they have visions of an abundance of incoming links, bringing traffic and page rank to their site. A hub site is all about linking, but outgoing links as well. The goal is to find and attract incoming theme related links, and link out to other authority sites that are similar in theme to yours.

As always, content is king. To gain authority status, as well as hub status, abundant content is essential.

As far as linking is concerned, a hub site should link out to similarly themed sites, including competitors, especially if those competitors are authority sites. To be seen as a true hub, links need to be created to the most important, as well as secondary and less important but closely themed sites. It's thought that Google is now placing strong emphasis on themes, so that very strong possibility should always be kept in mind.

But don't confuse a hub site with a link farm. Link farms don't care who they link to, as they are only concerned with increasing the quantity of links regardless of theme or content. There really isn't much of a reason to bookmark or revisit a link farm, and Google tends to agree.
